Meet Vishaka Mantri Roininen, UX Manager, who champions belonging and inclusion as the driving forces behind strong team culture and meaningful innovation.

What does belonging in a tech team mean to you?

Belonging in a tech team means being at the cutting edge of innovation, shaping what and how we build, with users as our guiding star. It also means taking responsibility for creating experiences that truly make smarter choices easier for our users.

When do teams perform at their best?

In my opinion, teams perform their best when they are truly enjoying building what they believe in. Most teams I have been part of have had some element of fun baked into their regular rituals. Like weekly online game sessions, sharing memes, playing bingo over the summer holidays (really recommend that one!) or just laughing when things get tough. These informal moments of lightness amongst all the serious work build camaraderie that can make a team sail through storms and come out stronger.

How can leaders create environments where diverse voices are heard?

Diversity and inclusion only move forward when people and leaders are genuinely curious. As a leader, I seek out perspectives that don’t agree with mine. Those voices challenge my assumptions, deepen my understanding, and either strengthen my thinking or help me see where I need to adjust. Both outcomes create better decisions and greater clarity. Creating environments where people feel safe enough to be themselves is how leaders can enable diversity.

What role does inclusion play in innovation?

Innovation thrives in environments where people feel included and safe enough to share bold and unconventional ideas. When someone is worried about how they’ll sound, how they’ll be judged, or whether speaking up could carry a cost, they will hold back. Creating an environment where people feel safe being themselves is the only way to help them bring all their crazy, wacky, innovative ideas to work.

Innovation is significantly boosted by diverse perspectives. I have been in countless situations where my initial solution wasn’t the best in the room, and having an inclusive environment that welcomes diverse ideas is the only way to be innovative.

What small actions make a big difference in team culture?

Fostering a team culture where team members see the human side of each other makes a substantial difference. Simple exchanges, such as discussing weekend activities or sharing recipes, can build trust and help colleagues recognise each other as people first. This human connection ensures that when life events occur, such as a team member taking sick leave, others are ready to step in and offer support.
